The best technology for stud and threaded bushing welding
Choosing the right stud welding machine depends on the fastener being used, the base material, sheet thickness, stud diameter and the production requirements of the application. A.T.S. supplies short arc and drawn arc stud welding systems for metal fabrication, structural work and specialist industrial applications, with configurations suited to different welding conditions and production volumes.
For heavy-duty applications, drawn arc stud welding machines with ceramic ferrules provide a well-established solution for producing strong welded joints. During the cycle, the arc melts the end of the stud and the surface of the workpiece while the ceramic ferrule contains and protects the weld pool. Where required, A.T.S. can also supply equipment configured for gas-shielded arc welding, using inert gas instead of a ferrule and, depending on the machine configuration, allowing studs up to 12 mm in diameter to be welded.
Short arc stud welding is particularly suited to thinner sheet metal, reduced material thicknesses and applications where access to the welding area is restricted. The equipment can be used with PD-type studs up to M8, ID-type internally threaded bushes and other compatible fasteners. In suitable applications, short arc welding can provide higher joint strength than capacitor discharge welding.
The available systems can be configured for manual welding as well as production processes with different levels of automation. The correct combination of power source, welding gun, feeder where required and fastener is essential for maintaining a stable and repeatable process, especially when welding multiple components or working with consistent production cycles.
A.T.S. supplies stud welding machines and complete welding equipment, supporting manufacturers, fabricators and engineering teams in selecting the most suitable configuration. Technical advice takes into account the welding process, material, thickness, fastener and production method to identify a practical solution for each application.
The drawn arc stud welding is a process of union between a metal threaded stud on a metal surface through the use of special equipment that by the welding gun, activates an electric arc which melts the tip of the stud and the surface below creating a weld bath that is contained within a ceramic ferrule.
In the long arc cycle welding the welding stud or pin are welded by an electric discharge that melts the material and the melting bath is contained either in a ceramic ferrule or remains free cooled by an inert gas that is automatically activated inside a protective positioner placed on the gun.
In the short arc cycle welding the electric arc is generated in a time of a few ms, this results in much lower melting material than long arc cycle welding and is mainly used to weld threaded studs up to M8 on thin sheet metal.
At A.T.S. Lamberti we offer a wide range of welding machines suitable for drawn arc welding works such as welding shear connectors used in mechanical carpentry, the long cycle welding studs in shipbuilding. Normally the drawn arc welding machines that supplies A.T.S are used for processing medium-heavy carpentry instead, short cycle stud welding is mainly used in the automotive industry such as welding thin sheets or in difficult positions.
The key elements include a careful cleaning of surfaces, the choosing of the correct equipment that normally A.T.S. advises to the customer, a proper adjustment of welding parameters, and the use of certified drawn arc welding studs.
